PTSD is essentially an anxiety disorder that is caused as a result of experiencing a highly stressful, distressing or frightening event. This can be anything from troublesome childbirth through to a car crash or experience of war. There are many reasons that someone can experience PTSD, and it is very unique in that not everyone who experiences similar events in their lives will go on to develop PTSD.

As well as PTSD, there is C-PTSD which is a complex post-traumatic stress disorder. This occurs when someone experiences repeated traumatic events and is prevalent in people who have experienced some form of abuse.

This anxiety disorder is treated in a number of ways, and it will depend very much on the symptoms the individual is experiencing along with the impact that it is having on their day to day life. Common treatments include antidepressants as well as trauma-focused CBT as well as other talking therapies. Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing has also proved to be very helpful for those with PTSD. It is important that all of these treatments are carried out by a professional who has the experience and qualifications related to treating trauma.
