What do you need to be a foster carer?

Far from common belief, you don’t need to jump through hoops to foster a child. However, here is what you do need:

Love

Put simply, you need to have a lot of love in your heart, ready to give to a child in need. Many children going through the foster system have been through so much and so it will be your job to help that child to grow, flourish and thrive under your influence.

Patience

As well as having love to give, you’ll need to have patience in abundance. Not all children will settle into their surroundings straight away, no matter how kind, caring and loving you are with them. There will be many ups and downs when fostering, which you and your family – if applicable – will need to be prepared for and willing to ride the waves.

Understanding

In the first instance, you will need to understand the child’s background. Then comes the rollercoaster of emotions – the tantrums, the tears, the withdrawal, the rebellion… you’ll need to truly get to know them and their temperament to learn how to support them and set appropriate boundaries.

Space

Last but not least, on the practicality side, you’ll need space for a child. Foster homes must, at the very least, be able to offer a bedroom for the child to call their own.
