Clean construction may be an unfamiliar phrase, but 100 mayors across the world’s largest cities are driving the idea of building affordable housing, which helps meet their aims of reducing global warming.
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is one city leader pushing the idea. He is backed by the Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Raynor, who claims there is no excuse not to meet the target of 1.5m new homes promised in the new government’s election manifesto.
What is clean construction?
Research into global warming suggests that the construction sector alone is responsible for over 23% of greenhouse gas emissions around the world, as well as using 30% of the world’s natural resources. Business as usual is not an option, and so there has to be a greener option.
Consequently, repurposing materials and retrofitting existing housing stock is a priority. Greener options, such as sustainable building materials, will be crucial to meeting targets.
How will clean construction create more jobs?
It is not only the drive for more housing-site jobs and the creation of sustainable materials which will generate new jobs, but also areas of the economy, such as the specialist retail market, including builders merchants jobs. If you are interested in positions like these, you can search for Builders Merchants Jobs at BM Careers or other similar sites online.
The opportunities are enormous, and not only governments but also local leaders and companies must lead the way.
One example is the commitment of city mayors when it comes to procurement. They can promote the use of low-carbon materials, carbon-capturing construction ideas and the use of recycled elements in buildings, such as steel and plastic. This will expand the number of jobs which contribute to the construction industry, potentially employing many more people.
Nor should it be overlooked that there is much more work to be done in reporting and verifying the results of clean construction to voters and residents of the towns and cities where the work is taking place.
Clean construction offers plenty of opportunities to expand the job market.
