How to get started in boating

  1. Choose the right boat

It is important to choose the right boat. Size, type, and other factors (powerboat, sailboat, canal boat) are important. Consider your intended purpose (cruising, fishing or watersports; escaping to the Mediterranean waters, inland boating in the UK, etc.). Speak to boaters and dealers. It’s best to start with a smaller vessel for newcomers. Smaller boats are less intimidating and easier to manage. As you gain more experience, you can upgrade to a bigger vessel.

  1. Get proper training

Investing in boating training and courses will help you develop the essential skills. Well-trained boaters are safer and more likely to enjoy their time on water. There are many training partners in the UK who can help you to learn the skills you need to stay safe and maintain your dream boat. The best way to get started is by enrolling in a boating course for beginners. For a RYA Day Skipper Course, contact https://www.solentboattraining.co.uk

  1. Safety

Safety equipment such as life jackets and fire extinguishers are important. Also, a first-aid kit is recommended. Learn the rules and use navigational aids. It can be difficult for beginners to learn how to dock/berth. This is not like driving a vehicle. Practise your docking in a quiet, uncrowded place. Don’t forget to ask experienced boaters for advice and tips.

  1. Check the weather

Check the weather forecast prior to heading out. Be aware of storms, strong winds and other adverse conditions. While on the water, keep an eye out for the sky. You should not go out on the water in bad weather conditions such as storms or high winds if you are a new boater.
