What you Need to do if a Power Cut Strikes your Home

Power cuts are just one of those annoying things that happen every now and again. Often bad weather like high winds will cause damage to power lines and cause a power cut to a local area. Sometimes local works can accidentally cause the power to be cut off. Whatever causes a power cut there are a few things that you should do in the event of one happening in your home.

First of all, make sure you have a made preparations for dealing with a power cut. A torch is essential with spare batteries! You could even get one of these Gener-g diesel generators to power up your home whilst you have a power cut.

The first thing that you should check when you have the power go off in your home is the fuse box – if any of the switches have tripped then switch it back on to restore power. If it doesn’t go back on, then you have a problem with the electrics in your home. Also check the electricity meter if you are on a pre-pay meter as you may be out of credit!

Once you have discovered that you have a power cut, it is a good idea to switch off all the sockets in your home, to prevent a power surge from damaging any of your appliances when the electrical power returns. Frozen food that has defrosted should be disposed of as it will not be safe to re-freeze before eating.
